About the establishment of the Institut Pasteur du Japon
Institut Pasteur (Headquarters: Paris, President: Yasmin Belkaid) is an independent, non-profit international research institute is the world leader in the research on viruses and micro-organisms such as AIDS, malaria, dengue fever and dysentery, and in the development of vaccines. In recent years, it has achieved remarkable accomplishments in the fields of human and public health, including the isolation of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the development of a vaccine for hepatitis B, and the development of a method to detect helicobacter pylori.
The Institute decided to establish the Institut Pasteur Japan (IPJ) to strengthen its collaboration with outstanding Japanese universities, research institutions, industry and public organizations to strengthen its contribution to planetary health, a global challenge that goes beyond human and public health, such as climate change, ocean pollution, loss of biodiversity, and pandemics of infectious diseases on a global scale. IPJ will be officially established on June 24, 2024, with the signatures of its trustee committee members (President of the Institut Pasteur, Ambassador of France to Japan, President of Tokyo University and President of Kyoto University).
IPJ will initiate various activities, including the Planetary Health Innovation Center (PHIC) in collaboration with Tokyo University and the Pasteur Aging Research Center (PARC) in collaboration with Kyoto University.
The establishment of IPJ is included in the Roadmap on France-Japan Cooperation under the "Exceptional Partnership", which was agreed by the leaders of France and Japan last December and is supported by the French and Japanese governments.
On the occasion of the IPJ establishment, a reception will be held at the French Embassy (Minato-ku, Tokyo) on Monday, June 24, at 6:00 p.m. with a signing ceremony among the members of the trustee committee of the IPJ; President Belkaid of the Institut Pasteur, Ambassador Setton of French Embassy in Japan, President Fujii of Tokyo University and President Minato of Kyoto University.
